Port Hinchinbrook Stage II - Council not fooled by questionable development application

MEDIA RELEASE 07 August 2012
Alliance to Save Hinchinbrook Inc.

Cassowary Coast Regional Council (CCRC) has made clear and strong responses to an attempt to have a new and different “Port Hinchinbrook Stage II” development proposal accepted as a mere “change” to a Development Application first lodged in 2008.

In 2009, state government departments advised the CCRC that an earlier “changed” version should be refused.

Nevertheless, the CCRC continued to grant the developer extensions of time to the present day, allowing the Application to remain “alive” under old legislation, the Integrated Planning Act. Otherwise, as a new Application, this battle-axe subdivision proposal would have to be assessed under the Sustainable Planning Act 2009 and the FNQ 2009-2031 Regional Plan, which allow no urban development south of the present “Port Hinchinbrook”.

Enjoying the weather has been tempered with the possibility of a 90 site, 240 bed RV Park being constructed on Lot 27V across the road from me at Coquette Point.

Wayne Swan forces ad hoc development in GBRWHA -  pre-empts proper assessment process
Picture
Media release by Alliance to Save Hinchinbrook (ASH) supported by members of the Cassowary Coast Alliance.

On the dubious basis that "Mr Katter insists there is no safe harbour for boaties between Cairns and Townsville", Wayne Swan has apparently bypassed all state and commonwealth legal, planning and approval processes.

He has given away $5.5m of Australian taxpayers' money for a boat harbour which can never be all-weather safe, on the cyclone-exposed Clump Point on the Cassowary Coast, a development idea for which there is not even an Application.

ON THE BEACH: A family of crested terns takes a break from fishing in this picture by Yvonne Cunningham.
WILDWATCH:  by  ANNE WILKINSON.

Wandering the Cassowary Coast beaches, bird watching is always a pleasure. It is a family rule always to carry a light pair of binoculars and, for me, a sketchbook.

There are so many different kinds of birds for which the beach and the sea are focuses.

WILDWATCH: by ANNE WILKINSON.

The exquisite beaches of the Cassowary Coast are often in the news, both for good and, sadly, sometimes for bad reasons.

Whatever the cause, the fact remains this region can boast some of the most beautiful beaches, even after Cyclone Yasi, in Australia.
